REPORT ON WHEELCHAIR DONATION

Source of the Wheelchair

On April 28, 2008, President Emmie Modesto of IWC Cabanatuan City personally picked up from the Inner Wheel Club of the Philippines ¢ Headquarters in Makati one (1) wheelchair and brought the same to Cabanatuan City . We understand that the wheelchair originated from the One World Institute organization.

Turnover of Wheelchair to end-user

On May 3, 2008, the undersigned, together with the Immediate Past President, Letty Wycoco, turned over the wheelchair to Mr. Fernando Martin whose left side of the body is paralyzed as a result of a stroke. It was pointed out to Mr. Martin that the wheelchair originated from One World Institute and that IWC was just assisting in the donation.

About the recipient

Mr. Fernando Martin, 59 years old, is a retired high school teacher at Nueva Ecija High School . He is married but was not blessed with a child. Currently, he is unable to walk because the left side of his body is paralyzed as a result of a stroke last March 4, 2008. He is both diabetic and hypertensive so the meager savings they have can barely cover for his medical expenses and their daily needs so they can not afford to buy a wheelchair. His wife stays at home and takes care of him with the help of a nephew. Mr. Martin has to be carried from his bed to a chair. When we went to their house, he was using a very old wheelchair borrowed from a neighbor. The old wheelchair can hardly move because the wheels are quite dilapidated already so he needs somebody to push it so he can move around. The scene is quite depressing when we arrived.

Mr. Fernando Martin is very grateful to have a new wheelchair. Now, he can move around by himself with his right hand maneuvering the new wheelchair. It really brought smile to his rather sad face and made coping with his difficult condition a little easier.

Other Remarks:

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to The One World Institute organization for their wheelchair donation and for trusting the Inner Wheel Club in distributing the same to the rightful recipient.

IWC Cabanatuan will appreciate it very much if we can have another wheelchair. Just yesterday, we received a request from the son of a 90 year old father who is no longer able to walk and lives in one of the urban poor areas here in Cabanatuan City .
